AAC-PTS Class of 2015 – Francisco Martinez
Francisco is a senior at Palmer Trinity School. He is set to graduate in 2015 and hopes to become an Agent of Change. When asked about what first drew him to the program, he said he “always felt an inclination to want to create some sort of change in people’s lives.” Like many of his peers, he never really knew how to approach this inclination or even where to start. He did not even have any clue as to how he could really help anyone. Then when he was first introduced to this program he saw the opportunity that could help him achieve his wish to improve his community.
My initiative is Palm Lacrosse
Palm Lacrosse is a Palmer Trinity sports team initiative that works with Breakthrough Miami students to introduce them to Lacrosse, a sport typically not funded in the Miami-Dade public school system. Our goal is to help these students stir away from bullying and other dangerous activities by providing them with the outlet of lacrosse. Thanks to grant money from Terra Bank, the first year Palm Lacrosse acquired sticks and balls for the lacrosse clinics. In the future, the clinics and equipment will be financially supported through a second initiative called No Shave November. During No Shave November students are provided a short period of time in November where they are not required to shave to come to school. To participate in No Shave November a student pays a fee and receive an orange bracelet. With this source of income, we are hoping to expand Palm Lacrosse to other Breakthrough Miami sites such as Ransom Everglades and Miami Country Day School.
