AAC-PTS Class of 2015 – Nicolas Balarezo
Nicolas is a sophomore at Palmer Trinity School. He is set to graduate in 2017 and hopes to become an Agent of Change. When asked about what first drew him to the program, he said he believes “we have few opportunities in life to discover what we are really made of and to really think about how fortunate we are and how we can give back.” His family is from both Peru and Ecuador. He has lived in Ecuador for 6 years and has had the chance to do a lot of trips similar to the ones that he would embark next year.
My initiative is Cleat Revolution
Soccer is nicknamed the beautiful game because it is watched, enjoyed, and played all around the world. The only problem is that not everyone has the same experience playing soccer as others. While some people play soccer with shoes and have a field in good condition to play in, others do not. My initiative is focused in Miami Florida because it is my community and it is facing this problem in some areas. To bring into a bigger perspective, Miami’s poverty rate is the worst of the U.S. cities. So if there is someone living in poverty, how can they get shoes to play the beautiful game? That is where I come in, Cleat Revolution is a non-profit organization that focuses on helping underprivileged kids and adults who can’t afford shoes to enjoy the “beautiful game”, which is soccer. In my initiative, my team and I ask for soccer shoes that people in our local community do not use anymore and are simply sitting in their closets, to donate them to us. Of course, the shoes must be in good condition and must have NO holes or anything that proves them unusable. As we receive the shoes, we will use materials to clean the soccer shoes to make them look new, as if they just came out of the box. The shoes that parents could not afford for their children that cost $80-200 will be brought down a great amount so people living in poverty can afford them (say about $10-50 according to type). They will then be put in my custom boxes that say the name of my organization and the sponsors that would desire to help me in the future. I believe that every person in this world should be able to enjoy the BEAUTIFUL GAME the same way I do, that is why I created Cleat Revolution.
